Funny Cake Recipe

This Funny Cake Recipe is sure to get everyone’s attention. It’s a delicious and unique twist on a classic dessert.

Serve this cake at your next party and watch it disappear before your eyes. Everyone will love the sweet and salty flavor combination. Plus, it’s really easy to make – even if you’re not a master baker.

What is funny cake?

Funny cake is a delicious vanilla cake over a chocolate filling layer that is baked inside of a flaky pie crust. Some people call it a cake, some people call it a pie, no matter what you call it, it is absolutely amazing.

Funny cake is said to get its name from the fact that it is a cake over chocolate in a pie. Other people think it got its name because you don’t put the chocolate in first. You place the cake layer in the pie shell and then you pour the chocolate over top. As the funny cake bakes, the chocolate sauce sinks to the bottom of the pan and rests on top of the pie crust.

Have you ever noticed how certain foods are very localized to an area. Some foods are everywhere. They make their way from one state to the next, across this country and that country, and through all cultures. Then there are some foods that people only know of in certain areas of a country, like Tandy Cakes or like certain southern foods. Funny cake is certainly one of those items. This Pennsylvania Dutch classic is a treat that many people do not know about outside of the area. It’s a shame for them because this is a must try dessert.

Is it a dessert or for breakfast

So many people look at this treat and think dessert. That makes sense. It is cake and chocolate and pie crust. However, around here a lot of people will eat funny cake as a breakfast cake. Kind of like how people like to have coffee cake or danish with their coffee in the morning.

Homemade or store bought crust

This is up to you. I have used both homemade pie crust and store bought. If you have a pie crust recipe that you absolutely love, use it. If you not, you can certainly use store bought.

How to store funny cake

You want to store the funny cake at room temperature. Once it has cooled, wrap it well with plastic wrap and store it in a cool place. I don’t like to keep cake in the refrigerator when I can avoid it because it dries the cake out and makes it taste dry and stale faster.

How long is funny cake good for?

Funny cake is good for three to five days. After that, it will start to get dry and hard. If it starts to taste a little dry, you can warm it in the microwave for about 10 seconds with a damp paper towel.

Can you freeze it?

Funny cake can be frozen for two to three months. Again, make sure it is tightly wrapped with plastic wrap or placed in an airtight container. When you are ready to serve it, thaw it overnight in the refrigerator and then let it come to room temperature before serving.

How much does this recipe cost to make

As of today, based on the prices at Kroger, this recipe costs about $0.53 per serving, and a total of $4.20 to make the whole recipe. This recipe makes 8 servings.

It is so good, seriously on of my favorite recipes, people actually pay $7 all the way up $16 a pie when they buy them in the bakery. Considering how quickly they get eaten in my house, I have to make them from scratch or else I’d go broke.
